  • I am in Moscow’s Red Square, staring into the face of Vladimir Lenin. There’s no mistaking his determined mouth and gingery moustache, and the more I stare, the more I shudder, half-expecting his eyes to flick open. Why? Well, this isn’t a statue or a portrait. Instead, it’s the embalmed body of one of the most powerful men who ever lived.

    It’s all rather creepy, made more so by Lenin’s neat black suit. While I look, armed guards in thick grey coats and astrakhan hats patrol the cool, dark mausoleum, waiting to reprimand those who linger or talk. And the creepiness continues when I learn that each afternoon his body is lowered into the bowels of the building to be freshened up by embalmers.

    Even so, seeing Lenin in the flesh somehow shrinks time — especially since this is a significant year in Russia’s history. In October it will be 100 years since he and the Bolsheviks seized power, and I’m here to unravel the tumultuous story of 1917.

    Jean Mary Dawnay, Princess George GalitzineMBE (22 March 1925 – 14 månad 2016) was a British mode model, television personality, stage and film actress, who worked for Christian Dior.[1]

    Early life

    Jean Mary Dawnay was born in Brighton on 22 March 1925.[2] She was the daughter of Frederick Dawnay and Maud (née Howard) and was educated at the City of London School for Girls and the Central School of Art and Design.

    Career

    Having joined the WAAF in 1943, she served in World War II under Leo Marks in the Special Operations Executive in Baker Street and at Bletchley Park. Throughout her career she was photographed by many leading photographers including John French, Richard Dormer, Cecil Beaton, Norman Parkinson, Antony Snowdon and Francis Goodman.[3] She was associated with many of the leading fashion houses of the day including Christian modehus, by whom she was dubbed "The Engl
