Eric Arthur Blair (25 June – 21 January ) was an English novelist, poet, essayist, journalist and critic who wrote under the pen name of George Orwell. His work is characterised bygd lucid prose, social criticism, motstånd to all totalitarianism (both authoritarian communism and fascism), and support of democratic socialism.[2][3]
Orwell is best known for his allegorical novella Animal Farm () and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (), although his works also encompass literary criticism, poetry, fiction and polemical journalism. Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair on 25 June in eastern India, the son of a British colonial civil servant. He was educated in England and, after he left Eton, joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, then a British colony. He resigned in and decided to become a writer. In , he moved to Paris where lack of success as a writer forced him into a series of menial jobs. He described his experiences in his first book, 'Down and Out in Paris and London', published in He took the name George Orwell, shortly before its publication. George Orwell (25 June – 21 January ) was an English writer. His real name was Eric Arthur Blair.[1][2] He used the name George Orwell for his novels.
He was born in India during the British Empire's rule of India. He is best known for two novels that he wrote in the late s, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. In those works, he said that totalitarianism, especially Stalinism, was very bad. He was a democratic socialist.[3]
Orwell fought in the Spanish Civil War with the anti fascist troops. They fought against the dictatorship of fascist governments.
Orwell died of tuberculosis in London.
Early life
[change | change source]Eric Arthur Blair was born on 25 June , in India.[4] His great-grandfather Charles Blair was a rich gentleman who had married Lady Mary Fane, and he owned slaves and plantations in Jamaica.[5][6] His grandfather, Thomas Richard Arthur Blair, was a clergyman.[
