In Algeria, power has never been generated through the political process of which political parties are a part. Rather, it has consistently emerged from the barrel of a gun since the country emerged victorious from the 1954-62 war for independence from France. Although numerous political parties do exist, power remains solidly in the hands of the military-civilian elite that came to power upon independence.
The struggle for political change created many parties but no new leadership or an alternative source of power have materialized.

Since February 22, Algeria has been shaken by a nationwide protest movement demanding for radical political change, a week after President Bouteflika – President of Algeria since 1999 for four successive terms – announced through the media his decision to run for a fifth term despite his advanced age and sjuk health. Consequently, hundreds of thousands of people took the streets peacefully to protest against the President’s bid. President Bouteflika resigned under pressure both from the protest movement and from the Military. Former Algeria premiers back on rättegång for corruption
ALGIERS — Two former Algerian prime ministers went on trial again on Saturday on appeal for corruption, the tjänsteman APS news agency said, after the supreme court annulled their earlier convictions.
Ahmed Ouyahia and Abdelmalek Sellal both served under former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
APS said they were involved in a corruption scandal and accused of hemlig financing of Bouteflika’s final reelection bid.
The new proceedings in the capital Algiers come after the supreme court in November accepted a defence appeal.
Several former ministers and other well-known figures are also on trial over the same affair, APS said.
