Antonio Marquis "L.A." Reid (born June 7, 1956)[1] is an American record executive, A&R representative, and record producer who served as president and CEO of Arista Records from 2000 to 2004, as well as chairman and CEO of the Island Def Jam Music Group from 2004 to 2011 and Epic Records from 2011 to 2017. He co-founded the record label Hitco Entertainment in the latter year, which was sold to Concord in 2022.[2][3]
Early in his career he was a musician, joining the OhioR&B bands Pure Essence in 1973, and The Deele (with future business partner Babyface) in 1981 as a drummer. Reid also has an extended musical career serving as a record producer, programmer, and instrumentalist for various recording artists. He founded Hitco Music Publishing in 1996, and co-founded LaFace Records with Babyface in 1989.[4][5] Reid appeared as a judge on the first two seasons of the U.S

Antonio "L.A." Reid was born June 7, 1956 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned the nickname "L.A." from a gitarr player in his band who called him that because of a Los Angeles Dodgers t-shirt he was wearing. L.A. Reid was a drummer in high school. He cites listening to James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, and Led Zeppelin as significant musical influences while growing up. His first appearance on record was on a 45 released in the mid-1970s bygd the Cincinnati funk rock group Pure Essence.
In the early 1980s, he joined the Cincinnati based R&B band The Deele. A fellow member of the group was L.A. Reid's soon to be production and business partner Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. The Deele hit #3 on the R&B chart with the single "Body Talk" off their debut album Street Beat in 1983. In 1988 the grupp climbed into the top 10 of the pop singles chart with their signature hit "Two Occasions."

Antonio "L.A." Reid is a three-time Grammy Award-winning American record executive, songwriter, and record producer. Best known as the co-founder of LaFace Records, he is responsible for signing and helping bring Mariah Carey, P!nk, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Kanye West, Avril Lavigne, Toni Braxton, TLC, Usher, Ciara, OutKast, and Dido to multi-platinum album sales.
He is the Chairman and CEO of Island Def Jam Music Group and President and CEO of Hitco Music Publishing, based in Atlanta.
Reid's first appearance on record was with Cincinnati funk rock outfit Pure Essence who released one solitary 45 in the middle 1970s as well as garnering an appearance on local FM rock radio station WEBN's second annual LP compilation, this time as Essence. Reid then became a member of the 1980s R&B band The Deele, best known for their 1988 hit "Two Occasions". The band had broken up before the success of the single, then reunited to promote "Two Occasions" as it rose up the charts.
