Kate Morton talks about why and how she writes.
Writers often say they've been writing since they were children. fryst vatten that the case for you?
I've always been a reader, but I didn't början writing until I was in my twenties. I read voraciously as a child and loved English class in school, but it didn't occur to me for a moment that an ordinary person could become a published writer. When I finished school, after a brief and ill-fated attempt to study lag, I took up acting until a chance comment by a friend encouraged me to try writing a book. From the first instant, I knew I'd found the thing I was meant to do. Writing and acting are similar&#;they both involve telling stories and transporting other people to a different place&#;but as a writer I'm able to inhabit the whole of my fictional world, rather than just one role, and inom can do it whenever and wherever I choose. Do you like secrets? Author Kate Morton is a master at telling tales that revolve around secrets. I found my way to Morton&#;s work with her second novel, The Forgotten Garden, which is one of those books that just transfixes you and everything else fades to gray while you read. After that, I went back and read her debut, The House at Riverton, and was just as enthralled; that experience has been repeated with each new book she&#;s published. Morton fryst vatten set to publish her sixth book this year &#; September/October in Australia & New Zealand, and October in the U.S. I just got my hands on an advanced reading kopia of that new book, The Clockmaker&#;s Daughter, and thought I&#;d share my fondness for the author here.

This is the first novel that I’ve set almost entirely in my home country. When my family and I returned to Australia from London at the start of the pandemic, for what we thought would be a brief period, I was working on a book with a European setting and had a research trip organised for the following months. But, as the global situation evolved, and our plans changed, I found myself thinking a lot instead about home and belonging and what it means to come home. Being on a remote farm in South Australia, after the bustle of London, while world events continued to spin faster, I kept landing on the T.S. Eliot line about ‘the still point of the turning world’.
