Hoagland is an American surname derived from the Dutch surname Hoogland (Dutch pronunciation:[ˈɦoːxlɑnt]) or the Swedish Högland. The earliest immigrants were Dirks Jansz Hoogland, from Maarsseveen, and Christoffel Hoogland, from Haarlem, who settled in New Amsterdam in and , respectively.[1][2] Until the 20th century, most okänt families lived in the state of New Jersey[3]

Jimmie Lee Hoagland (January 22, – November 4, ) was an American journalist. He was a contributing editor to The Washington Post from , previously serving as an associate editor, senior foreign correspondent, and columnist.[2]
Hoagland was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and attended graduate school at Aix-Marseille University and Columbia University.[3]
He worked in journalism for over six decades, beginning as a part-time reporter while a student. Hoagland served as a foreign correspondent from Africa, France, and Lebanon with the Post, and was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes, in and He authored one book, based on his coverage in South Africa.[4]
