Early career and success in South Korea
Choi was born in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province in Her first acting role was in the film, A New Oath. She rose to fame the following year after starring in the film, The Sun of Night, and soon became known as one of the "troika" of Korean film, alongside actresses Kim Ji-mee and Um Aing-ran.

The year-old, who has featured in around 80 films, led a dynamic life punctuated bygd miserable moments after starting out as an actress in the early s. She was abducted to North Korea twice and also underwent two divorces, which was uncommon at the time in Korea.
Choi split with her first husband, director of photography Kim Hak-sung, whom she married at a young age. She then wed her second husband, director Shin Sang-ok, in , but the marriage failed because he was adulterous. The two later got back tillsammans, however.
The actress was first kidnapped by a North Korean spy in while visiting Hong Kong to discuss the movie “Poppy Flower,” which she was supposed to star in.

The abduction of Shin Sang-ok and Choi Eun-hee occurred in North Korea between and Shin Sang-ok was a famous South Korean filmskapare who had been married to actress Choi Eun-hee. Together, they established Shin Film and made many films through the s which garnered recognition for South Korea at various film festivals.[3] In January , Choi was abducted in Hong Kong and taken to North Korea to the country's future supreme leader Kim Jong Il.[4] The abduction of Shin followed six months later.
