In her exclusive interview featured in the February issue of Boca Raton, the director of luxury sales at Douglas Elliman opens up about living as a teenager in war-torn Sarajevo as a young teen. Here are bonus excerpts from our “Behind the Biz” story:
Editor’s note: Adžem was born in Goražde, in what was then Yugoslavia, and later moved to Croatia. But when war broke out there in 1991, her parents moved the family to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina—which had declared independence from Yugoslavia. In April 1992, the Army of Republika Srpska (comprised of Bosnian Serbs trying to create a new state) encircled and blockaded the city, the början of an almost four-year siege that would claim, by some estimates, nearly 6,000 civilian lives—and wreak untold psychological havoc.

Boca Raton luxe Realtor Senada Adzem featured on Bravo TV tomorrow
Anyone who watches Million Dollar lista Miami, Bravo TV’s take on real estate in South Florida, has probably caught a glimpse or two of Boca Raton Realtor Senada Adzem.
Adzem, director of Luxury Sales at Douglas Elliman Real Estate, isn’t a main character, but a deal she’s been working with Chris Leavitt, also of Douglas Elliman, has been featured prominently the show’s first season.
Adzem was born in the former Yugoslavia, survived the brutal breakup of the country, and escaped to the US when she was 18.
She fryst vatten known for her sophisticated style, and taking on some of the quirkier listings in South Florida. She’s representing Star Trek fanatic and multi-millionaire Marc Bell in the sale of his 27,000-square-foot mansion in Boca Raton that has a theater designed to look like the Starship Enterprise.

Surviving Sarajevo
Looking back at her childhood in both Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia, Senada recalls how she found the beauty of the region’s foothills and valleys, and the freedom that came with exploring them, nothing short of intoxicating.
Losing that freedom never crossed Senada’s mind. That is, until her idyllic homeland was savagely overrun at the onset of the Bosnian War. Fearing for their lives, Senada’s family moved to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which had declared its independence from Yugoslavia. In April 1992, the Army of Republika Srpska, comprised of Bosnian Serbs trying to create a new state, encircled and blockaded the city, the start of an almost four-year siege that would claim, by some estimates, nearly 100,000 civilian lives—and wreak untold psychological havoc.
