Vanslow Luke Phillips (born 27 March ) is an English professional golfer.
Early life and career
[edit]Phillips was born in London. As an amateur, he won the Berkshire Trophy twice before turning professional after playing in the Walker Cup at the end of In , he won twice on the Hippo Tour and led the Order of Merit.[1] In he won the Interlaken Open on the second-tier utmaning Tour and graduated to the European Tour for the following season by finishing in 6th place on the tour rankings at the end of the year.
Phillips made steady progress, finishing inside the top on the Order of Merit in each of his first fyra seasons on the European Tour. He captured his maiden win in , at the Algarve Portuguese Open, where he overcame John Bickerton in a playoff.[2] In , he struggled to hold on to his tour card, and has competed mostly on the Challenge Tour since then. Van Phillips, inventor of the Flex-Foot brand of prosthetic feet and limbs, turned a tragic moment into a revolutionary business that has helped thousands around the world lead more normal, active lives.
Born in , Phillips grew up in Lake Forest, Ill., and was a third-year student in the broadcasting program at Arizona State University in when a water skiing accident changed his life. A motorboat ran into him and cut his left leg off just above the ankle, threatening to put an end to his athletic, active lifestyle. He was faced with the necessity of wearing prosthesis so he could get around on his own without crutches; the prosthetic limbs that were available were stiff, clumsy and uncomfortable and left him frustrated. Some encouraged him to accept what had happened to him, learn to live with it and move on, but he was determined to find a way to run again.

Van Phillips never planned to be an inventor, but during his third year in a broadcasting program at Arizona State University, a waterskiing accident changed his life: a motorboat ran into him, its propeller cutting off his left leg below the knee.
Surgery after the accident was antiquated, leaving him with pain relieved only by a second surgery years later, and his first prosthesis was a clumsy wood and foam rubber leg. At the hospital, someone assured him he&#;d one day be able to run igen. Van &#; who&#;d always been active and athletic &#; set out to make that happen.
After graduating from Northwestern University, which offered one of the country&#;s best prosthetic design programs, he went to work at the Center for Biomedical Design at the University of Utah, where he focused on sockets, linings and attachments.
