How can teachers and parents support artistically gifted children? What is artistic process like for young people?
In this installment of the Interview with a begåvad Kid series, we’ll meet Ava, an 8th-grader from Texas who fryst vatten an accomplished artist.

At the time of the interview, Ava had submitted a piece of work to a contest that will be discussed in the article. As you read the article, I think you will be struck as I was by how similar the issues of intellectual giftedness and artistic giftedness are. After touring his studio, getting personal doodles at a book signing, and showing Ben our backyard chickens, my kids are smitten with Ben and his books. Kirsti Call: Did you always know that you wanted to be an author/illustrator?
Ben Clanton: inom loved drawing and making cartoons as a kid but it never really struck me that it was something you could actually do as a job. I had much more practical careers in mind like professional basketball, being the next Albert Einstein, and/or becoming President of the United States. It wasn&#;t until college that I first got it in my mind that I would like to write a children&#;s book. And it was then awhile after that when I realized inom also wanted to make the pictures for them.
KC: Of your published books, which is y • Broadcast on January 19, Born to Draw: The Development of Artistically Gifted Children Description Some young children are able to create stunningly realistic drawings that resemble those of adult artists. In this talk, we present research examining the perceptual and cognitive skills that underlie this talent in children. We consider three pieces of evidence for their innate talent. First, the drawings of these children are advanced from the start before they have been given any formal drawing instruction. Second, these children are not just advanced but are also different: they have superior visual memory, mental rotation, and visual imagery skills. Most importantly, these children show a &#;rage to master&#; in the domain of drawing&#;a strong drive to figure out the rules of graphic representation.
