Bulgarian violin virtuoso Vasco Abadjiev was born on this day in - 90 years ago.
A recognised child prodigy, he made his international debut aged 6 – and at just 12 years old was awarded 1st prize at the Liege International Violin Competition.
Specialising in the virtuosic repertoire of Niccolo Paganini, Abadjiev graduated from the Brussels Conservatoire aged 13, with the highest distinction - and commenced a brilliant yet interrupted international concert career.
Plagued by the war years and the death of his beloved mother in , much like contemporary Christian Ferras, his adult life tragically spiralled into sadness, alcoholism, financial struggle and deep depression.
Vasco Abadjiev sadly took his own life in – aged just 51, yet fortunately bequeathed the world a brilliant and treasured recording legacy.

Vaco Abadjiev (14 January December ) is the son of Nikola Abadjiev, a violin professor at Sofia Conservatory, and Lala Piperova, a pianist.
In June he played an extremely difficult schema in Vienna before the jury of the First International Competition in Violin. The 6-year old child became the sensation of the contest. Among the great violinists of the 20th century only he made an international debut at this young age.
In he left for Brussels with his parents. In May Vasco Abadjiev was awarded the first prize and gold medal at the VI International Violin Competition Fritz Kreisler in Liege. At the beginning of World War II the family settled in Berlin, where Vasco perfected in playing the violin and piano, composition and counterpoint. He gave concerts under the conductor's baton of W. Furtvengler, K. Byom, N. Bongartz, H. Abendrot, Y. Mengelberg and others.
