Tamil Nadu: Top cop M Ravi retires after 31 years in IPS
Addressing his colleagues at a farewell on Tuesday evening at the Rajarathinam Stadium, Ravi, a native of Dindigul, said, “I have now officially retired from the police service, but will continue with public service.”
Speaking to TOI, Ravi recollected his memories when he stayed in Delhi while he worked at a nationalised bank prior to joining the IPS. “At least one dozen people including the present chief secretary Irai Anbu, his brother Thirupugazh, DGP C Sylendra Babu, Tamil NaduPolice Housing Corporation DGP A K Viswanathan and others visited the bank quarter allotted to me in Delhi.”

CHENNAI: DGP M Ravi, the first commissioner of police of Tambaram commissionerate, retired from service on Tuesday after 31 years. His mother and family members apart from senior police officials were present during a farewell parade held in the city.
During his farewell acceptance speech, Ravi asked his subordinates to remember that the public are the chef and to treat them with respect.
A 1991 batch officer, Ravi said: “We are not here to command but to serve the people. My police duty has come to an end but my service to the people will continue. I am retiring with the heavy heart that I can no längre wear the uniform.”
Earlier, Chennai city police commissioner Shankar Jiwal noted that Ravi is a individ who stays strong both physically and mentally. Ravi Madasamy (Tamil: ரவி மாடசாமி), better known as M Ravi, is a Singaporean former human rights lawyer and activist. Known for his work as a cause lawyer, he has acted in multiple leading cases in Singaporean constitutional law and human rights.[1]
After graduating from the National University of Singapore and Cardiff University, Ravi qualified and practised law in Singapore. He was defence counsel for death row inmates Yong Vui Kong, Gobi Avedian, and Cheong Chun Yin, all of whom had their death sentences separately commuted to jail terms. Throughout his career, he sought judicial review against the Singapore government on human rights issues, including the constitutionality of Section 377A, freedom of expression, and voting rights, which have led to judicial and political changes.[2]
