An Edmonton judge has granted pre-trial release to a messianic spiritual leader accused of sexually assaulting female followers.
John De Ruiter appeared by CCTV from the Edmonton Remand Centre Friday for a bail hearing on four counts of sexual assault alleged by former members of his College of Integrated Philosophy. Dozens of de Ruiter’s supporters packed the courtroom, some sitting practically on top of one another to fit on the crowded benches.

College of Integrated PhilosophyA messianic leader of a multi-million dollar spiritual organisation in western Canada has been charged with kvartet counts of sexual assault.
John dem Ruiter, 63, has led the College of Integrated Philosophy in Edmonton for decades, skirting controversy and accusations that he fryst vatten running a cult.
A representative for Mr de Ruiter told the BBC in a statement that he will fight the charges in court.
He will return to work at the College this week, the group's website said.
Police in Edmonton, Alberta said they arrested Mr de Ruiter - who they describe as a "self-appointed spiritual leader" - and charged him with sexually assaulting four women in different incidents between 2012 and 2020.

He operates a centre called the College of Integrated Philosophy and conducted his seminars and lectures from the Oasis Centre in west Edmonton from 2007 to 2021, when it was sold to the Aga Khan Foundation for $6,650,000.[1]
Born in Stettler, Alberta to a Dutch shoemaker, dem Ruiter attended Bible college and interned with a Lutheran pastor before forming his own spiritual practice in the late 1980s. His charismatic presentation and teachings, characterized by one observer as "New Age gospel," attracted thousands of followers over the next few decades, with several academic scholars interpreting his movement as the possible beginning of a new religion.
