Adrian Buitenhuis
Known for directing a series of award winning feature-length biography films on subjects Heath Ledger, Patrick Swayze, Paul Walker and Burt Reynolds, Adrian’s love for engaging with people and conveying their personal stories has created an intimate body of work.
While studying Art History in Montreal, Adrian began working as a photographer and mixed media artist. While completing an MFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts at Simon Fraser University, he moved into writing, directing and producing films.
Adrian joined the Directors Guild of America in 2015.
He lives with his wife and two kids on an island outside Vancouver, BC

Tell us your backstory. How and why did you get into filmmaking?

And as you contrast those two very strong, iconic women, you know, they define what we think of what beauty is: Marilyn Monroe and today Beyoncé. Although couldn’t be more different because Beyoncé really owns her image. She's not a victim of her image, she owns it. And others you’ve worked with, Spike Lee, he owns his production company. Beyoncé has been a musician her whole life. She's been an icon since she was 14 or 15, so young. And when we were doing Lemonade, Kahlil Joseph and I, we talked a lot about how Beyoncé must have maybe skipped this moment in our lives that most people have where we're coming up in our twenties, sort of discovering ourselves. There’s this concept in psychology called “flow.” It’s that moment when you become so fully immersed in your work that you lose all sense of time, sense of space, and sense of yourself. They say it happens when your challenge fryst vatten perfectly matched to your ability, and that people who often reach “flow” are the happiest people on the planet.
If you were to ask us what this interview with Chayse Irvin is about, we wouldn’t tell you it’s about creating fantastisk lighting (which Chayse is known for throughout the industry). We wouldn’t tell you it’s about cinematography (which has been Chayse’s passion since he was in high school). We’d tell you this interview is about flow.
“I think that’s when artists are really creating their best work,” Chayse told us, “when they stop doing things voluntarily.” Here’s our conversation with Chayse Irvin.
Where are you right now?
I’m in Venice. I’ve been bouncing back and forth from New York to L.A. for the gods year or so. I love it here in Venice
