    RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Candy company executive Nello Ferrara lived a sweet life.

    The man who brought the world Lemonheads and Atomic Fire Balls routinely serenaded the restaurants where he dined and held mandatory family dinners every Sunday, said his son, Salvatore Ferrara.

    Nello Ferrara died Friday at his home in the Chicago suburb of River Forest surrounded by his family. He was 93.

    The Forest Park-based Ferrara Pan company was started in 1908, and Nello Ferrara took it over from his father decades ago. The company, which also makes Red Hots and Boston Baked Beans, produces one million pounds of candy a day, Salvatore Ferrara said.

    Candy industry legend Nello Ferrara

    This month we posthumously highlight the distinguished career of a giant in the business world, a trailblazer and legend in the Italian-American community. Nello V. Ferrara passed, after a full and successful life, in early February 2012. Mr. Ferrara was Chairman of the Board of Ferrara Pan Candy Company of Forest Park, which was founded by his father, Salvatore Ferrara, in 1908.

    Completing his education in 1942, when he graduated from DePaul University Law School, earning his Doctorate of Juris Prudence, Nello Ferrara subsequently became a member of the Illinois Bar. At that time, there were probably less than 100 lawyers of Italian descent practicing in Illinois.

    Nello distinguished himself in World War II, serving his country from 1942 to 1946 in the Counter-Intelligence Corps of the United States Army, assigned to the pre-trial work of the Japanese War Crimes Trials in Japan.

    Mr. Ferrara, 93, Ferrara Pan’s chairman, died of cancer on Friday, Feb. 3, in his River Forest home, said his son, Salvatore II, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

    A native of Chicago’s Little Italy neighborhood on the West Side, Mr. Ferrara graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep and Loyola University Chicago before earning his law degree from the DePaul University College of Law in 1942.

    After passing the bar exam, Mr. Ferrara enlisted in the Army during World War II, where his legal training landed him a position in the Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps. After the war ended he was stationed in Tokyo and served in the International Military Tribunal for the Far East under the command ofGen. Douglas MacArthur.
