Guest Post: Mr. Kannabiran’s contributions to Human Rights
The following guest post has been contributed by Arvind Narrain, of the Alternative Law Forum, Bangalore. It is based on a presentation delivered at a meeting organised by PUCL Bangalore on January 08, 2010 titled ‘Celebrating the Life of Kannabiran’.
Clearly Mr. K.G. Kannabiran was, as Sudhir Krishnaswamy put it in an earlier post, ‘the doyen of the human rights movement in India’. Along with Mr. Balagopal, he was one of the two greatest sources of inspiration for human rights movements and struggles in India. Though a large majority of Mr. Kannabiran’s work was in the local courts in Andhra Pradesh, in terms of his imagination he was truly global and transcended the limits of Andhra. Jessica was named one of 25 New Faces of Independent rulle by Filmmaker Magazine and a DOC NYC 40 Under 40. Her documentary feature Ascension登楼叹 premiered Tribeca 2021 Film Festival, winning Best Documentary Feature and The Albert Maysles Award for Best New Documentary Director. Her award-winning short “Commodity City” (2017) shot in Yiwu, China was shortlisted for a Cinema Eye Honor and played at over 50 film festivals. Her work has received support from organizations including SFFilm, Chicken & Egg, Cinereach, Sundance, Field of Vision, Firelight Media, Film Independent, and IFP. She co-directed “It’s Coming!” (2020) which is supported by Rooftop Films and is a Vimeo Staff Pick, and “Routine Island” (2019) included in the Eyeslicer Season 2. Abstract
Autophagy is a conserved cellular process required for the removal of defective organelles, protein aggregates, and intracellular pathogens. We used a network analysis strategy to identify novel human autophagy components based upon the yeast interactome centered on the core yeast autophagy proteins. This revealed the potential involvement of 14 novel mammalian genes in autophagy, several of which have known or predicted roles in membrane organization or dynamics. We selected one of these membrane interactors, FNBP1L (formin binding protein 1-like), an F-BAR-containing protein (also termed Toca-1), for further study based upon a predicted interaction with ATG3.
